Actual weather

at St. Maarten

For a great day at the beach!

A great weather at St. Maarten is an important part of successful holidays. As the both sides of the island are dependent of tourism, all major activities and things-to-do are related to a sunny weather.

Below we have compiled the tools we used to check the weather, and also useful information about the weather during the year, aka the best time to visit St. Maarten depending on the weather.

Wind forecast:

The wind forecast is a good way to predict the weather for your next outdoor activities.

  • Blue colors generally mean slow or almost no wind. That's great weather for kayaking and paddleboarding.
  • Green color announces more wind, generally 15-20 knots which is great for windsurfing or kite surfing activities, kayaking is still possible.
  • Orange and red colors mean strong winds and most of the time heavy rains.

Forecast models can only predict precise weather only within a 3 days range. Looking after, the weather won't be accurate.

Current wind:

Checking the actual wind is precious for those looking for windy activities like kite boarding, windsurfing or even surfing. If you like sailing on a boat, this is very important to check before leaving the port.

Useful information about the weather at St. Maarten:

As St. Maarten is a small island, you might think that the weather is  the same all around the two sides.

This is not the case.

St. Maarten offers two sides, one called Leeward side and the other is called Windward side. "In the latter case, the windward side is that side of an island subject to the prevailing wind, and is thus the wetter side. The leeward side is the side protected by the elevation of the island from the prevailing wind, and is typically the drier side of an island. This is an important factor in the oceanic islands" (Source: Wikipedia)

Windward side is the Atlantic side, and Leeward side is Caribbean Sea. Most of the winds come from the Atlantic and are called Trade Winds. They are stronger during November and April (most of the time). It could be annoying for those looking for no wind, but it also freshens the air. During the hurricane season, it is super warm, with a lot of rains and sometimes, obviously, hurricanes.

Because of the geographic situation, weather can drastically change between the Dutch and French side. As an example, you might face heavy showers at your hotel at Simpson Bay (South part) and at the same time the weather is absolutely sunny and bright at Pinel island (North part). Do not hesitate to ask locals about the particularity of the weather at St. Maarten.

If you plan to come kayaking or paddleboarding with us, you can possibly ask us through WhatsApp about the weather at Pinel island before visiting us.

What is the weather like during the year?

Trade winds: those winds occur between November and April, which is exactly the moment of the high season here. They provide fresh air to the island, showers (usually during the morning), and maintain in general a comfortable temperature.

Spring: right after trade winds comes a kind of spring with less wind and higher temperature. This is the best season as it's generally a calm moment after high season and before hurricane season. It lasts from May to July. This is a great moment to visit St. Martin as the weather is great for kayaking or paddleboarding, days are longer and the island is less crowded.

Hurricane season: is an important step in a year. It officially starts in July to finish in December, but the real hurricane season is September - October with high risk of serious weather. We do not recommend visiting St. Martin at this time of the year, but it is also a special moment for us, as the island is almost empty of visitors, we encounter a lot of rain which makes the island super green!
